You probably dont have readwrite permissions to the /dev/nst0 device. You should do as root: groups bacula (Generates list of groups that user bacula is a member of) And check the permissions and ownership with: ls -la /dev/nst0 If you dont know how to interpret the output correctly you can mail the output.
