It does work on X Server. There are at least three people on this list with X Server (in the multiples of servers by the way) that use Bacula. I'm not one of them :-)
Make sure you build out your configure script to point to the appropriate location of MySQL (which is really the only difference between the X client and X Server as far as Bacula is concerned.)
