Hello, This is my first post on this list. I've been pushing bacula as the best opensource multiplatform backup system, and have successfully deployed it in multiple environments. It's an awesome tool, my thanks to everyone involved in the project and specially to Kern Sibbald.
On my last deployment, i've installed Bacula 1.38.11 on FreeBSD 6, and we're using as a library a HP MSL 2024 with a HP LTO3 Drive. On most of my installs i've used always the tapes only once per day and never had to "add" backups to any tape, however, on this last one, we're using one only tape for incrementals, and we're seeing long times when bacula needs to position itself on the Tape. The times are around 1Gb per minute: 14-Dec 23:02 rap-sd: Volume "Diario-02" previously written, moving to end of data. 14-Dec 23:46 rap-sd: Ready to append to end of Volume "Diario-02" at file=48. This is with 41Gb on the tape. Since i've never had to do this, my question is: Are these numbers normal? does these numbers check with people's experience on the list? (i know these must vary depending on machine, drive,os...) . If so, we may be better of using more tapes, since the backup window is going to really suffer when the tape has 300Gb... If these numbers are not normal I'll post more specific data (sd config, drive...) And also another question: I've deployed bacula file daemons on Solaris, Linux, FreeBSD and windows, but on those last ones we're having hang problems on the daemon, every now and then, the file daemon crashes on any of those windows, and we have to restart the service manually. I've not seen anything on the event viewer or on the bacula directory, and wonder how can i "catch" the problem, since it may work flawlessly 2 weeks and then hang. Sometimes on one windows, sometimes on other (so is not a problem with that concrete machine). These are Win2k3 with SP1. Is this also normal behaviour (i.e. some stability problem solved on next version) or the other people on the list hasn't had any problems with the windows client?
