I did this successfully with an older version of bacula, and in fact I couldn't figure out how to restore it 'in place' (I was doing a bare metal client restore under XP with bartpe). In the end I had to format the new partition and restore it to C:\C. Do you get an actual error when you try, or does the director not let you do it? An alternative could be to restore to a linux machine and copy files across, as long as you don't need the acl's and ownership information...
