Most probably not...

First, make sure that the SD is really stuck. The longest timeout that 
could be involved is about two hours if I recall correctly.

Observe the output from 'sta sd=your-tape-device' for anything unusual. 
You can also check with top or ps that the SD process is really stuck - 
the WCHAN address should not change then, I think.

You might have to shut down the SD and restart it, thereby losing all 
running jobs.
You can try to turn off the tape drive, turn it on again, and hope that 
the SD fails the labeling with an error so you can re-label the tape, 
but that's a last resort.

Use the time waiting for any timeouts to think about upgrading :-)
