Well...there is a Windows API for opening files specifically for backups. Some 
virus-protection software (Symantec [Norton] Anti-Virus) allows you to exclude 
all files opened for backup purposes, regardless of the application opening the 
file.

The Bacula documentation states that Bacula backs up Windows systems using the
Windows API calls, so virus protection software should be able to easily exclude
Bacula.
