It is certainly possible to have the MySQL base on a different server, check out the manual: http://www.bacula.org/rel-manual/FileSet_Resource.html#SECTION001590000000000000000 You may also have to adapt the make_bacula_tables (and similar) scripts before running them. The fact that Bacula pulls in the MySQL headers when compiling is normal, without them, it wouldn't be able to 'speak MySQL'.
