Hello,

Bacula BETA 2.1.8 is almost ready -- Dirk and I are working on a few last
minute improvements to make the bat restore command a bit more useful (it
currently doesn't allow any mods). I expect to release it before the end of
this week.

This new code has a lot of performance improvements in it as well as a
considerable number of fixes for bugs in version 2.0. The code is quite
stable -- I have been running it in production here for quite a while with no
problems. However, please remember this is BETA code, so use it with extreme
care in a production environment.

One of the new features of 2.1.8 is our first cut of the Bacula Administration
Tool or bat. Please keep in mind that currently bat is in what I would
consider an ALPHA state. That is it basically runs and has more
functionality than either the wx-console or the gnome-console. However, it
is possible to crash it, it has only 1/100th the features we want to add, and
it is a bit rough around the edges.

With the above reserves (ALPHA nature of the software), I personally believe
that bat is really cool, but if bat doesn't please you or it doesn't have the
features you want, we will be willing to hear any *positive* suggestions for
improvements.

However, keep in mind that we are a bit overloaded and concentrating on adding
functionality rather than making it look pretty (at least at the moment). If
it crashes, before sending an email (to the bacula-devel list), please ensure
that the crash is repeatable and send us the *exact* sequence of
commands/clicks that make it crash.

A couple of points:
1. Bat does not currently run on Win32. Hopefully it will before the official
2.2.0 release.
2. Bat probably will not handle foreign characters correctly for the moment.
We'll work on that a bit later.
3. If you are in a "restore" dialog, you cannot click on any of the other
panes -- it is likely to seg fault. We are aware of this limitation and
still working on a viable solution.
4. There are a number of feature items we would like to add listed in the
src/qt-console/README file.
5. You must have Qt4 installed on your system to build it. Scott will provide
binaries as an additional rpm file ...

Best regards,

Kern
