Well, mainly you'll want to follow Christians suggestion to have a look at the Nagios plugin. There's all the code there to do a Bacula-compliant handshake. I suppose you could easily adapt the plugin to Hobbit, or simply put a small wrapper script around it. Second, you should consider upgrading to 2.2.4. A rather serious bug has been fixed by that version which will, most probably, hit you some day.
