For anyone who is following this thread I have an update. Unfortunately I am replying to my own post rather than the last poster who had suggested a modification. Anyway, I just wanted to report that I set the following value in /etc/sysctl.conf: vm.min_free_kbytes = 32768 Since doing this I have yet to have a crash of the system. Although the suggestion for making this change was not really indicative of the symptoms it has seemed to have a positive impact as the system has not crashed during bacula backups. I still do not really know the root of the problem and how running a VM impacts bacula backups and system stability but this setting appears to have helped the situation. I still find it strange that even without this setting I have zero crashes during a bacula backup as long as I do not have a VM running. If I experience a crash again I will update the thread, but for now the system has been quite stable.
