For anyone who is following this thread I have an update.  Unfortunately I
am replying to my own post rather than the last poster who had suggested a
modification.

Anyway, I just wanted to report that I set the following value in
/etc/sysctl.conf:

vm.min_free_kbytes = 32768

Since doing this I have yet to have a crash of the system.

Although the suggestion for making this change was not really indicative
of the symptoms it has seemed to have a positive impact as the system has
not crashed during bacula backups.

I still do not really know the root of the problem and how running a VM
impacts bacula backups and system stability but this setting appears to
have helped the situation.

I still find it strange that even without this setting I have zero crashes
during a bacula backup as long as I do not have a VM running.

If I experience a crash again I will update the thread, but for now the
system has been quite stable.
