Hello, I am running bacula on a software raid5 running debian stable with mdadm, and I was wondering if somebody on this list is a sys admin and uses similar setup a lot and has these "steps" to increase servers performance.
ext3, 4x500gb, raid5, with 8gb of ram, and amd opteron with debian amd64 For some reason I am experiencing delay in responses from debian. I open a terminal or do "ls" and it takes about half a second to display the results. I have tried increasing the /sys/block/md1/md/stripe_cache_size but that didn't solve my problem and I'm not sure if it increased the write speed. I've set /sys/block/md1/md/stripe_cache_size to 1024 I see a higher write speed when doing dd if=/dev/zero of=/bigfile bs=1M count=8192 but iostat doesn't show higher write speeds. So what should I be looking at exactly? how to benchmark hdd, memory, kernel, network to find out what is going on? iostat -m 1 I don't see higher write speeds. It seems as its all memory written until later. Can iostat showing me the right results? So if you are using raid5 and have steps I could reproduce to find my bottleneck let me know.. step 1 is....? step 2 is...? ....
