Another way of dealing with cheap USB-drives could be to build a zfs-pool. You'll need to set up a Solaris or FreeBSD (I took a FreeBSD zfs-only system) host which serves at least as the SD. In the end you'll have a bunch of cheap hardware made reliable with the amazing capabilities of zfs.
