On cenots 6 by default that's root:root. That's the problem: ./vchanger vchanger.conf slots Failed to switch to user .. Refusing to run as root Using Changer Command = "/etc/bacula/vchanger -u bacula -g bacula %c %o %S %a %d" fixed it. FYI, on centos 6 (presumably entire RHEL6 family) $SD_USER and $SD_GROUP can be set in /etc/sysconfig/bacula-sd. By default that file does not exist and everything runs as whoever runs init.
