I don't quite understand. It will take twice the disk space whether using RAID1 or rsync.

There is only one copy disk. I assume that once a "magazine" disk if full it's not going to fail while it's sitting there idle. (That was proven wrong, by the way, once or twice over the years.)

The copy disk keeps a copy of the "currently active" magazine, it's only using "+1" space. If you only have one magazine drive that's twice, I have 10.
