Hi there,
This question might be answered somewhere but I didn’t find the proper source
to find it out.
It may not be answered explicitly, but all the needed capabilities are
simply part of the core Bacula feature set.
I want to split Quantum i3 library with two differen virtual libraries with two
different size tape drives LTO6 and LTO8
The therminology here is not quite clear -- do you want to partition the
library itself, so that it appears as two inependent sets of devices on
whatever interface you connect through?
so I can run incremental and full backups in the same library. Has anyone done
that and is there any downside/upside on doing this?
Yes and no, I think.
My suggestion would be to create a setup where the actual separation of
different devices is done by Bacula, not the library, as it gives a bit
more flexibility.
In the SD, create your actual devices assigning distinct media types.
Start by coming up with a naming scheme that works for you; I would
propose to use something like
location-i3-LTO6
location-i3-LTO8
but of course you may have other ideas. Having aczual media type and
location in there makes things easier to understand, but if that's
useful or a distraction depends on your usage patterns, i guess.
Then, add all those devices to the same Autochanger resource in the SD.
Not that Autochangers do not have Media Types, and that's where the
"magic" happens :-)
Then, create two storage devices (or autochangers) on the DIR side,
obviously both referencing the same SD Autochanger but using the
different Media Types.
I would also suggest to create Pools with a storage device configured,
and in your case, this would probably mean to have a pool with "Full" in
its name pointing to the LTO8 Autochanger.
I would also suggest to set up either your Jobs (preferrably using
JobDefs) using {Full,Differential,Incremental} Backup Pool" directives
or the schedules using those settings, so anytime things happen
automatically, jobs will always go to the intended Pool and Storage.
All of those things are documented, putting them together is easy, but
developing the idea may be a bit tricky if you're just starting with
Bacula ;-)
Have fun with it, and while I'm at it -- happy new year to all of you!
Cheers,
Arno
Thanks
B.
