Hi all, in addition to Rob's questions, a few observations.
Aparently, it's a catalog update that fails. You can try to see what PostgreSQL is doing, some queries to the database engine may give good information (nothing I memorized, sorry).
Even just checking via Bacula (through bconsole's sqlquery, a status dir or a list command) or using the psql tool might reveal database problems.
It is possible the connection of the DIR to the database engine was lost for some reason, in that case, a restart of the DIR will be needed.
And, finally, a full filesystem of the database engine could cause this but you would have seen that already, I think.
