Hello everyone, We would like to share an update on the evolution of the Bacula documentation, as several changes made over the past years now come together in a more unified structure.
Originally, our documentation was available as HTML and PDFs generated from LaTeX. As the project grew, we moved to an online format by transcribing the LaTeX sources into reStructuredText (rST) and using Sphinx to produce HTML content. This shift gave us a more flexible and maintainable system. Building on that foundation, we have since introduced a number of improvements. The documentation now includes a search engine, a reorganized structure to make content easier to follow, and new introductory materials aimed at helping less experienced users get started more quickly. PDF versions of the main chapters remain available for those who prefer working with them. Another important step in this process is that the documentation for Bacula Community and Bacula Enterprise is now offered in a single location. This is possible because the core codebase is mostly identical between the Community and Enterprise editions, with the main differences being related to plugins. As a result, a unified documentation makes sense and allows us to present the shared core concepts clearly, while articles are explicitly marked to indicate which edition they apply to. This makes it easier to navigate the common material while still highlighting distinctions where they matter. We also want to take this opportunity to reaffirm that Bacula Systems continues its commitment to the Bacula Community project. We remain dedicated to bringing new features, enhancements, and updates to the Community edition, which we consider a key project within the open source ecosystem. We are proud to support such a large and diverse community of successful Bacula users worldwide. We hope these changes make the documentation more accessible and useful for everyone. As always, your feedback is welcome and appreciated.
