Before engaging in a new political project, I read (or sometimes re-read) books and essays which will help me to become empathetically attached to the people I wish to sway or activate in the particular endeavor. Before the Alabama tax issue, I read John Locke, as it helped me to connect with the mainly Republican and moderate voter base necessary to create our landslide victory in that state referendum. I read Rothbard and Rockwell before engaging in the Russo campaign. I read the anti-Federalist papers before the Badnarik campaign.
On many issues where I must connect with the feelings of well-intended moderate or left-leaning voters or potential supporters, there is one author I find myself reading over and over again: Dr. Mary Ruwart. I've found Healing Our World in an Age of Aggression inspiring and helpful in causes ranging from healthcare to neighborhood revitalization to justice issues to working with people in the peace movement.
If you haven't done so already, I'd strong recommend reading Dr. Ruwart's Healing Our World. It always ranks somewhere in my list of the top five most influential libertarian "how-to" books.
