A great opportunity is at hand not only to get candidates on the ballot this year in Alabama and Nebraska, but also for the Libertarian Party to earn ballot access in those states through an important presidential election year in 2008.
 
In Nebraska, we need 4,735 valid signatures (about 7,000 total) to get a statewide slate on the ballot for this November’s elections.  If we can do that, it will be very likely that at least one of those candidates will earn 5% of the vote for a statewide office, which would qualify the Nebraska LP for ballot status through 2008.  According to Richard Winger, Editor of Ballot Access News, every party that has qualified a slate for the Nebraska ballot in midterm elections since 1912 has succeeded in retaining ballot access.  The petition deadline isn’t until August 1, but we need to get started ASAP to make sure we can get this finished in time.
 
But our really critical situation right now is in Alabama.  There the LP is in the process of gathering 41,012 valid signatures (about 61,000 total) to qualify a slate of candidates for this November’s ballot, including Governor and a State Supreme Court justice.  There will be no Democratic candidate on the ballot for this State Supreme Court justice seat; therefore there will be an excellent chance for the LP candidate to get over 20% of the vote, which would then qualify the LP for ballot access in Alabama through 2008.  The LP retained ballot status in Alabama after the 2000 election, in which the LP earned over 20% of the vote for a statewide office that went unchallenged by a Democratic Party candidate.  We can do it again this year, given the current strong dissatisfaction with the two older parties.
 
But, the petition deadline is Tuesday, June 6—just two weeks away (unless a judge moves the deadline back in a pending litigation, but we can’t count on that).  The Alabama LP has been working hard on this, gathering more than 10,000 volunteer signatures.  But the pros are needed now, and they’re starting to hit the streets hard.
 
And, another problem is money.  Combined, these petition drives will cost $100,000, but it will save us money—and sweat—and tears—in 2007 and 2008.  And it will allow many more LP candidates to run for public office than if we waited to do these petition drives later.
