Setting aside the business of "honor" in the middle east for a moment, it is
reported by several observers (e.g. Mirza Habib Afnan) that Baha'u'llah firmly
believed there was a Text from the Bab forbidding marriage with His wives (He
had 2). So, Baha'u'llah saw Azal's marriage to Fatimih Khanum (the widow of
the Bab) as a clear violation of this explicit instruction -- by none other
than the person (Azal) whom claimed to be a successor to the Bab!

So all the other statements from Abdu'l-Baha and Shoghi Effendi, seems to me,
to stem from these comments of Baha'u'llah.

Therefore the issue is about obedience to the Covenant of the Bab, in form of
following His explicit instructions when they were still in effect. Or at
least that's my understanding of how Baha'u'llah understood the issue.

Best wishes,
Ahang.
