Karl Marx was a member of the Young Hegelians, and Georg Hegel was a major inspiration as Marx developed his theory of dialectical materialism. From Hegel, Marx got his version of the dialectic, while his materialism came largely from Ludwig Feuerbach. Marx said that he turned Hegel upside down on his head. Presumably, what he meant by that was his subtraction of Hegel's dialectic (modified from Fichte) from Hegelianism and his addition to it of something like Feuerbach's materialism. What became known as "communism" in the 20th century had absolutely no resemblance to the condition advocated by Marx. To Marx, communism was a classless, stateless society (not unlike anarchic communism). It would be preceded by socialism - a dictatorship of the proletariat (working class) - in which the workers would seize control of the government. Clearly, the Guardian was not referring to Marxist communism but to the perversion which was developed by Lenin, Stalin, etc. Regards, Mark A.
