"The Civil Rights act was passed in the latter part of 1964, not 1963. It
grew out of the Civil Rights protests which began in 1955 with the
Montgomery Bus Boycott."

Oops. Thanks Susan. I've never claimed to be a historian & I had Rosa
Parks associated with the 60's rather than 50's. I wasn't around in the
50's but, in my mind the 50's is "Happy Days" & "Leave it to Beaver", not
civil rights protests.

Certainly, Montgomery was a seminal moment in the Civil Rights struggle.
But, am I imagining it or wasn't there a qualitative/quantitative shift in
the level of protest in the mid & late 60's after the Civil Rights Act
became law. Perhaps it is just my misperception, but it seems like the
level of civil rights protest & mainstream acceptance & support for the
Civil Rights Act (perhaps in response to violent resistance to it in the
South) stepped up more into the mainstream & college campuses in the mid to
late 60's.
