dear susan,
my dim and odd recall of early Christianity is that the jamesians didn;t get
beaten by the paulines, but by the romans. that up til the time when josephus
decides to be a good roman citizen the jamesians, or petrines, or whatever,
were following customs rather like those of the Master's in attending mosque,
and in 70 aD or thereabouts fled off towards damascus. to what extgent to
syrian and coptic Chrsitians involved Law as part of religious praxis?
as a pure side note, after beginning the work of furthering the process of
entering myself into >being< a Baha'i, i found charles w. armstrong to be
rather a cogent interpreter of history, etc.
the odd thing is that until i got relatively comfortable in my skin with what
Baha'is call progressive revelation, he would not have. i think. and the
further i read the beloved Guardain the higher the appeal i saw, and respect
held for jimmy swaggart, who i still reallly like, altho i havent heard any of
his stuff newer than 2000.
the point is perhaps that from a standpoint of taxonomy, these divisions may
be more in our beholding than their being.
Christ lays the Law on 2 foundations. He (other than divorce, adultery)
doesn;t seem to be saying that the rest of the Law is >bad< commenatry, only
that wthout the twin manifestations of love the system is pointless. thus,
changing sabbath praxis without changing sabbath...a point armstrong picks up
as part of the adventist tradition.
