I beg to differ. A covenant, unlike a contract, is unconditional on both parties. You can't make a contract with God, the Unconditioned, and expect specific performance (remembering that a contract is as good as its enforcement). There are no 'deals' with God: you can't limit your responsibility or enforce what you think is God's responsibility. A covenant is not subject to the exchange of consideration. One party may not be aware of the covenant (as in a bequest) but it is still valid. It can be transitive, with the obligations passing to the heirs and successors. In books on the law of contract, a covenant is treated as a subcategory of contract -- they have no choice, since they want to include it, but defined their field as "contract." But don't be fooled by the layout of the books.
