The Baha'i Studies Listserv The terms 'right' and 'left' in political jargon (I've never heard of up and down) are derived from the seating arrangements of the Estates General on the eve of the French Revolution. High churchmen and members of the nobility were seated on the right whereas the commoners were seated on the left. The Left Wing therefore is seen as representing the interests of the common people where the Right Wing represents the interests of the elite classes.
