Self-praise is seen as a bad thing in the Baha'i Faith. We are to praise others, but not ourselves. What I want to be sure of is the exact reason for this. There are three possibilities I can think of:

a) Self-praise leads to vanity and ego. Though praising oneself might be perceived negatively by others, and stir up bad feeling (like "boy, he's really full of himself"), that is not the reason why we aren't supposed to do it.

b) Self-praise can be perceived negatively by others, and hence one should not do it. The reason does not relate to the possibility that vanity and ego could result.

c) A combination of both

I'm pretty sure that there is just one reason, and that while the second may have merit, it is not the actual reason why self-praise is a bad thing. I think one could find the same thing with not being allowed to have sex before marriage. I'm sure one could think of sorts of ideas why sex before marriage is bad aside from the actual reason given, and those ideas aren't wrong.

Regards,
David
