It seems that the character of Mary is being re-visited a lot lately. Here's an article I ran across today:

Dear Patti,
Thanks, that was great. I am interested to know how Catholics feel about the claim of Gregory the Great that other Mary's in the Bible were references to Mary Magdalene, given that the Church took this interpretation back a few decades ago. Shouldn't this be a little damaging for the entire claim of the Church? I thought the Pope couldn't err in his interpretations.
One thing the article could have added is reference to Romans 16:7, which refers to Junia, a woman, as an apostle. Some scribes changed the name to Junius, since they didn't think Paul could have meant to refer to a woman as an apostle. Apparently Junius isn't a men's name, or even a name. If you check a number of versions of the Bible you'll find that the name is sometimes one, sometimes the other.
Regards, David
