Baha'i Arohanui Kathy *************** From: "Chris Jones" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Wednesday, September 10, 2003 6:21 PM Subject: Fw: Re: February 2004 Conference Conference Announcement: "Indigenous Knowledge and Bioprospecting" February 12-14 (15), 2004 Macquarie University, Sydney Australia http://laurel.ocs.mq.edu.au/~cjone005/index_conference.htm Auxiliary Children's Conference A children's conference on "celebrating indigenous knowledge" will be held parallel to this conference. More >> Approximately 25% of all Pharmaceutical products worldwide are appropriated from Indigenous communities. This represents more than a 200 billion dollar share of the global market. In 2000 Australia "won" the highly uncoveted "Captain Hook Award", presented by the NGO RAFI to the country that has engaged in the greatest levels of "biopiracy", or theft of genetic material. This was awarded "for over 118 dubious claims and possible piracies that either found their real origin in developing nations or which local Indigenous communities had real ownership over". There has been no specifically organised forum since then for Indigenous peoples to respond to this injustice. Such a consultation is also timely considering that 2004 marks the end of the "International Decade of the World's Indigenous People" (1995-2004). It is hoped that the dialogue established at this conference will stimulate focus on important roles that Indigenous Peoples have in contributing to the formulation of our civilization and the relationships that underpin sustainable use of technological capacities. This conference, Indigenous Knowledge and Bioprospecting, will provide a forum where Indigenous peoples, scientists, and lawmakers will consult about this situation. The consultation will focus on three key areas related to Indigenous Knowledge and Bioprospecting. Following the Conference, on February 15th, a consultation forum will be held on discussing issues associated with the development of a Multi-First-Nations owned pharmaceutical company. The development of appropriate ethical protocols for consultation with/among Indigenous Peoples will be the first and primary focus of discussion. ******************* PLEASE GO TO THE WEBSITE TO READ MORE. ---------- You are subscribed to Baha'i Studies as: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe send a blank email to mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Baha'i Studies is available through the following: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] http://list.jccc.net/cgi-bin/lyris.pl?enter=bahai-st news://list.jccc.net/bahai-st http://www.escribe.com/religion/bahaist (public) http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED] (public)
