The US military very carefully established that an "I was following orders!" defense is NO defense. Yes, any of the soldiers at My Lai could have chosen to not follow those orders. If brought up on charges for refusing he would have the right to defend himself. I doubt that Calley would have brought an individual up on such charges simply because he obviously knew the precarious position he was in. ----------
