Title: Nature of correspondence between Baha'u'llah and the Bab

Dear friends,

I am trying to learn a little about the nature of the correspondence that took place between the Blessed Beauty and the Bab.  Are any of the tablets available for study or has anyone studied this topic?  Do we know the nature of the communication, subjects/topics, etc.?  Any information would be most appreciated.

Regards,
Payam

Between Bah'u'llh and the Bab there was communication privately. The Bab wrote a letter containing three hundred and sixty derivatives of the root "Baha." The Bab was martyred in Tabriz, and Bah'u'llh exiled into Iraq-Arabie in 1852, announced Himself in Baghdad.

        (Abdu'l-Baha, Baha'i World Faith - Abdu'l-Baha Section, p. 221)

Bah'u'llh, maintaining through continual correspondence close contact with the Bab, and Himself the directing force behind the manifold activities of His struggling fellow-disciples, unobtrusively yet effectually presided over that conference, and guided and controlled its proceedings.

Such a man, with such a record of achievements to His credit, could not, indeed did not, escape either the detection or the fury of a vigilant and fully aroused enemy. Afire from the very beginning with an uncontrollable enthusiasm for the Cause He had espoused; conspicuously fearless in His advocacy of the rights of the downtrodden; in the full bloom of youth; immensely resourceful; matchless in His eloquence; endowed with inexhaustible energy and penetrating judgment; possessed of the riches, and enjoying, in full measure, the esteem, power and prestige associated with an enviably high and  70  noble position, and yet contemptuous of all earthly pomp, rewards, vanities and possessions; closely associated, on the one hand, through His regular correspondence with the Author of the Faith He had risen to champion, and intimately acquainted, on the other, with the hopes and fears, the plans and activities of its leading exponents; at one time advancing openly and assuming a position of acknowledged leadership in the forefront of the forces struggling for that Faith's emancipation, at another deliberately drawing back with consummate discretion in order to remedy, with greater efficacy, an awkward or dangerous situation; at all times vigilant, ready and indefatigable in His exertions to preserve the integrity of that Faith, to resolve its problems, to plead its cause, to galvanize its followers, and to confound its antagonists, Bah'u'llh, at this supremely critical hour in its fortunes, was at last stepping into the very center of the stage so tragically vacated by the Bab -- a stage on which He was destined, for no less a period than forty years, to play a part unapproached in its majesty, pathos and splendor by any of the great Founders of the world's historic religions.

(Shoghi Effendi, God Passes By, p. 69)

The appointment by the Bab of Mirza Yahya as the leader of the Bb community took place on the advice of Bah'u'llh. 'Abdu'l-Bah states that some time after the death of Muhammad Shah it became evident that Bah'u'llh's fame had spread far and wide in Persia and it was essential to divert public attention away from His Person. To achieve this aim Bah'u'llh advised the Bab to nominate Mirza Yahya. This advice was communicated through the medium of a trusted believer, Mulla Abdu'l-Karim of Qazvin, otherwise known as Mirza Ahmad, who was able to make contact with the Bab. The appointment of Mirza Yahya, who was then in his late teens, had the obvious advantage of enabling Bah'u'llh to direct the affairs of the community behind the scenes through the instrumentality of Mirza Yahya, who, in reality, was merely the ostensible head until the advent of 'Him Whom God shall make manifest'.
