Dear fellow Bikers,
I have been here in UK only for 3 weeks now, and just cant stop
dreaming of riding my P220 back in Pune. I see a lot of bikers here in
London, in full riding gear (called as riding uniform here), on many
grand bikes. The urge to just ride has put a wild thought in my mind...
I'm evaluating importing my P220 to the UK.. crazy right.. yes I'm :)
Well its not as difficult as it might seem. I have done quite some
research on this, and here is how things work (roughly)...
-Transport bike to UK
-Pay customs and other duties
-Transport bike to nearest MSVA office for certification tests and
registration (if it passes the tests).
-Pay road taxes, insurance, get coded number plates
-Just Ride
Biggest problems/questions:
-Not sure if P220 is compliant with EU emissions standards (compliance
to EU standards means no modifications needed, and generally things
will move faster); will email Bajaj Auto to find this out
-MSVA has a list of tests which they will conduct on individual
imports.. The P220 will definitely fail on the below two..
-Rear view mirrors (As we all know that they are a joke on the
P220, and of no real use)
-MSVA requires all vehicles to be registered to indicate
speeds in MPH (The P220 Speedo is KmPH calibrated) (means I have to
put a new/analogue MPH speedo)
-Costs involved (biggest cost it the shipping cost, all other taxes
and fees are kind of ok)
-How do I service the bike, and what about spares when needed.
Now the question is to find out total costs and headache involved, and
if reasonable, proceed. Else, switch to Plan B, which is to buy a used
bike (upwards of 2000£ for around 300cc displacements) here itself.
Guys, please advice me or let me know if anyone has done anything
crazy stuff like this. I wont mind if someone can persuade me (read
'put some sense' in me) to switch to Plan B.
