If you use an auto rickshaw or ride a bike to work, here's some bad news. The
traffic department is considering a ban on motorbikes, auto rickshaws, trucks
and tempos from plying on highways during peak hours.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic-suburbs) S M Sabde believes the move
will help cut down journey time on highways to half.

"If we ban trucks, tempos and autos on highways during peak hours i.e. 9 am to
12.30 pm and 4 pm to 10 pm, traffic movement will be smoother. Public transport
such as BEST buses will reach faster. The idea behind banning bikes on highways
during peak hours is to cut down on the number of accidents," he said.

All the 28 divisions of traffic police in city have been asked to prepare
feasibility reports and suggest alternate routes for vehicles that will not be
allowed on highways during peak hours. They have also been asked to report the
conditions of the alternate roads to assess the speed of traffic after
diversions. The reports are expected to be ready in next two weeks. The traffic
department also plans to invite suggestions from people as well as other
authorities.

"Violations of restrictions will attract a fine, however, the department is yet
to ascertain the amount," Sabde said.

Isnt this weird? I've yet to see bikes choke up traffic...the picture itself
shows how many bikes are there in it...
