Good morning, friends.
This is a Sunday morning call from the north resort island of Bali. The north part of this sea-sand-sun island is distinctively well-known as one of the unique places for dolphin species. Well, while environmentalists around the world are struggling to preserve dolphin, IP says that old crude oil power plant ex-Tanjung Priok would not endanger for underwater life, including dolphin.
This is not faithful. How so ? Well, let me point out just a few news stories in recent days :
1. The Economist, November 2nd 2002, mentioned that � To most Canadians, the sign of climate change are all too obvious. Two decades of above-average temperatures have left praire farmers counting crop losses from droughts. In Arctic region, melting sea-ice and permafrost portend an altered life for northerners. �.A rise in summertime smog has brought an increase of asthma among children. This summer, when families escaped to their cabins beside lakes and rivers, they again found water levels far below childhood memories.�
So, Canada has every reason to halt global warming because of carbon dioxide emissions generated from industry. There are two provinces in Canada which rely on Non-Oil Energy for industry. Manitoba province uses much ethanol, while Quebec relies on hydro power. Therefore, instead of Alberta which depends heavily on Oil, Manitoba and Quebec are in compliance with the Kyoto Protocols on Sustainable Development.
2. Mr. Emil Salim ( Ex-Minister of Environment, Republic Indonesia ) wrote about �Economy in Environment � ( Ekonomi dalam Lingkungan ) on Kompas, November 26, 2002. He mentioned that an Economic development should be as a subsystem of preserving environment, and not the other way around. The development of industry avoiding environmental impacts would yield an unsustainable development of the industry itself. Furthermore, he pointed out that destroyed coastal areas by waste oil and polluted water would kill tourism industry, etc. Then, he proposed that project development risking the healthiness of human beeing and environment should be accompanied by ISO 14000 to make corporations willing on maximizing efforts to preserve environment
3. The �Prestige� ship with a full of crude oil sinking on the coast of spain last week has destroyed and endangered a lot of sea water life, including sea birds, turtle, many different fish species, etc.
Finally, as we approach the end of Ramadhan and Galungan & Kuningan, I wish that it would be a good time for IP to share some of our concerns about negative environmental effects of crude oil power plant plan in Pemaron.
