Halo mas Antok, barusan saya baca di majalah Prima baby tentang VSD. (edisi
Winter 98/99) Kuketikin ya. Mudah2an berguna. VSD itu singkatan Ventrocular
Septal Defects. It is 'a hole in the heart'. The term 'hole' is used to
describe a range of conditions, of varying seriousness. But it usually
refers to one of two defects, where the wall between either the two upper
or two lower heart chambers fails to seal totally. Di situ disebutkan ada
satu case di mana seorang bayi bernama Carla has a small VSD, which means
the hole is in the wall separating her lower heart chambers. This hole is
located in the lower part of the septum, the muscular wall that separates
the heart's chambers (ventricles). A baby may suffer from breathlessness,
difficulty feeding and be smaller than other children their age. Surgery is
not always necessary.
Yg satu lagi namanya Atrial Septal Defects. This is a hole in the wall
between the 2 upper parts of the heart (atria). There are no symptoms
except a heart murmur. It is best if the hole is closed before the heart
becomes too enlarged.
What is a murmur means?
If your baby has a heart murmur it is probably not a problem. But it might
be a telltale sign of a hole in her heart. Before her six week check, Carla
Ellis showed no signs of heart trouble. 'She was feeding well, wasn't
breathless and her skin was a healthy pink colour' recalles her mum
Ashleigh. But as soon as the doctor listened to Carla's heart, her mum know
that something was wrong. 'She just kept listening,' says the 33 year old,
'switching the stethoscope from Carla's chest to her back over and over
again.'Finally the doctor explained the problem to Ashleigh. Carla had a
heart murmur., and although she didn't show any other symptoms associated
with the condition - bluish skin, difficulty in feeding or breathlessness
-- it was probably caused by a hole in the heart.
'Being told your seemingly perfect baby has a heart condition is a terrible
shock,' recalls Ashleigh. � couldn't think of a single thing to ask. I just
agreed to take Carla to hospital the next day, then I went home and cried.'
When a doctor listens to a baby's heart, he hears a murmur in 1/5 of them.
But in 3/4 of these children, the murmur is 'innocent'and there is nothing
to worry about. Innocent murmurs can come and go, depending on several
factors, including your child's breathing and even the way he's sitting.
These noises are harmless and often disappear by puberty.
As Belinda Linden, a cardiac nurse adviser at the British Heart Foundation,
explains: 'The murmur is the noise caused by blood flowing through the
valves as they open and close. Most are harmless, but a cardiologist (a
heart specialist) will know if there is a more serious problem.'
At St. Albans Hospital, in Hetfodshire, Cala was given a chest X-ray and an
electrocardiograph (ECG) to see how well her heart was working. The tests
confirmed that the murmur was in fact caused by a hole.
Carla is 18 months now and is slightly smaller -- although no less
intelligent -- than most children her age. 'I take her to the hospital
every 3 months' says Ashleigh, 'and still hope she won't need an
operation.'

Putri saya baru berusia 3 bulan 22 hari. Pada saat berusia sekitar 1,5
bulan, saya membawanya ke dokter anak untuk memeriksa kondisi kesehatan
fisiknya setelah bepergian dengan pesawat dari Jakarta ke Batam.
Sebelumnya, saya telah memeriksakan kondisi kesehatannya pada dokter
umum untuk meminta rekomendasi boleh bepergian dengan pesawat terbang.
Dari dokter anak tersebut, kami diberitahu kalau putri kami mengalami
gangguan jantung, yaitu tidak menutup sempurnanya katup pada jantung.
Beliau juga menginfomasikan bahwa katup jantung ini seharusnya sudah
bekerja dengan sempurna pada saat bayi lahir dan menangis dengan
kerasnya. Mungkin saya tidak terlalu memperhatikan secara detail, tetapi
dokter tersebut menyebutkan VSD (Verti Secular Defect, maaf kalau ternyata
salah) sebagai nama populer jenis kelainan ini.
Mungkin teman-teman semua ada yang mengetahui lebih detail tentang
kelainan ini, karena saya ingin mempersiapkan segala sesuatunya untuk
putri pertama saya.
