New Polio Vaccine Recommendations A federal advisory committee has recommended that healthcare providers use the injectable, not the oral, form of the polio vaccine to help reduce the risk of infection for infants and toddlers. The oral vaccine, which has been used routinely in the United States since 1965, causes eight cases (one for every 2.4 million doses) of polio per year. Until recently, experts believed the benefits of the oral vaccine outweighed the risks of contracting the disease. The oral vaccine is made from a live virus, which makes it more effective against the disease and therefore at preventing polio epidemics. Now, however, successful global polio eradication programs have made the likelihood of an epidemic in the U.S. practically nonexistent. As a result, experts have concluded that the safer but less effective injectable vaccine, made from a deactivated virus, provides sufficient protection. The CDC is expected to accept the committee's recommendations for a new polio vaccination program. If it does, beginning January 1, 2000, children will get four doses of the injectable vaccine, one at two months, one at four months, one between six and 18 months, and one between four and six years.
