ASK AN EXPERT:
Introducing New Foods

QUESTION: What can I do to encourage my 12-month-old to try new foods?

ANSWER by Jill Stovsky, M.Ed., R.D., L.D. : As you've no doubt noticed,
babies often react negatively to new foods but will usually accept them with
time and experience. It can take ten to 20 introductions of a new food
before a baby will eat it, so don't give up after one try-and don't ever try
to force-feed a baby (you'll be in for continuous food battles if you do).
All you can do is present the new food to your baby and let her decide how
much of it she'll eat, if any. Many parents discover that when their baby
sees them or other family members eating a food, he becomes interested in
trying it, too. So be patient, continue to offer your baby new foods along
with those he already enjoys, and don't force the issue. If you continue to
offer support and encouragement along with the new foods, he will eventually
feel comfortable eating them. Good luck!
