Cervical Polyp During Pregnancy

Bryan S. Jick, M.D.,
I am 6 weeks pregnant and have been experiencing some bleeding (very light
and brown for the most part). I went to the emergency room for fears that I
was miscarrying. I was told that I was not. The doctor said that it appeared
the source of my bleeding was what looked to be a polyp about 1.5 inches in
my vagina. When he touch it with a swab it bled easily. I can't seem to find
anything on this type of polyb. I never had any problems before I got
pregnant from spotting. He told me there was no reason for alarm. What do you
think?

Answer:
I have seen this many times. A cervical polyp is a common condition, and is
seen unrelated to pregnancy. The polyp is a fleshy growth attached to the
lining of the cervix. It bleeds easily, can grow bigger if left alone, and
can be removed by a simple procedure (if you know what you're doing). If I
see a polyp in an early pregnant patient, I usually remove it, and put lots
of pressure against the cervix with large cotton balls (called "pom-poms!"),
until all the bleeding stops. Then I advise pelvic rest (no sex, lifting,
exercise) for 1-2 weeks. Polyps rarely come back, and there should be no
impact on the rest of the pregnancy. You were right to consult with a
physician on this and I suggest that you continue to speak with your
physician if you have any questions or concerns.
