Salam kenal. Ini pertama kalinya saya posting di balita-anda. Saya ayah dari
satu putri berusia 5 bulan.
Ada dua pendapat yang bertentangan mengenai bayi yang menghisap jari. Ada
yang pro dan ada yang kontra.
Ini yang pro; kutipan dari buku "How to Have a Smarter Baby" karangan DR.
Susan Ludington-Hoe, 1985. (maaf bahasa Inggris):
" Babies need to spend many hours a day satisfying their strong sucking
reflex. In the first six month of life,infants who are able to satisfy their
needs with unlimited sucking may be less likely to become thumb suckers in
later years. So help your child find and suck on his fingers. Even hold his
hand, so that while sucking, his fingers won't fall out of his mouth.
Pacifiers help satisfy this important need, and contrary to popular belief,
will not cause your child to have crooked permanent teeth.
Sucking may have additional significance. When babies put their fingers into
their mouth they produce saliva. The normal newborn's saliva contains nerve
growth factor, a substance that helps heal wounded tissues, and in
experimental mice, helps nerves grow. It is interesting that the human
newborn swallows some of his saliva and that the nerve growth factor can
then be digested and circulated through the blood to the nerves and the
rapidly growing brain. Although the effect of the nerve growth factor on
human nerve development has not yet been established, it is possible that it
works in humans just as it does in mice. The effect of nerve growth factor
on the body's central nerves (spinal column and brain) is still unkown."
