Lysine

What It Is
Lysine is one of the amino acids considered "essential" because they cannot
be manufactured in the body and must be obtained through diet. Lysine is
available in natural and synthetic supplement form.

What It Does
Amino acids are the raw material used by the body to manufacture human
proteins. These proteins are a vital component of all the body's cells.

Why You Need It
Lysine plays an especially important role in the production of antibodies,
hormones, and enzymes. It is also important for the repair of damaged
tissue.

Can You Take Too Much?
Amino acids are rarely toxic, even in large amounts.

Recommended Daily Allowances
There is no official recommended dietary allowance for lysine. The estimated
adult daily requirement is approximately 5.5 milligrams per pound of body
weight. Infants need 8 times that amount; children, 4 times that amount.

Women who are healthy and eat a well-balanced diet do not require lysine
supplementation during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you do use a
supplement, take it in moderation.

Best Dietary Sources
Good sources of lysine include red meat, milk, cheese, eggs, fish, lima
beans, potatoes, soy products, and yeast.
