To: Colonel le Chevalier Armand d'Hubert, OC 27M
From: Captain Beau Jolais, Regt Adjutant 27M
Sir,
The physician's report on Major Tournet, after his
tragic accident while inspecting the barracks' kitchen,
has passed across my desk and I'm afraid does not make
pleasant reading. It seems most unlikely he will be in
a fit state to command his troops come the Summer
campaign.
The investigation concludes that this was a simple case
of 'severe scalding and concussion by mis-adventure'
and there is no suggestion of foul play (by Spaniards
or any other). I have, however, ordered higher standards
of tidiness in the kitchen to prevent another such
occurrence.
I hear that Brig Culvert d'Eau is considering volunteer-
ing the brigade for service next month, making the
appointment of a replacement battalion CO and urgent
issue. Furthermore, I'm sure there's no need to remind
you that the new major will have battlefield command of
the regiment in the Summer, with all the more senior
officers being attached to other commands.
With this in mind, I have taken the liberty of drawing
up a shortlist, assigning points based on rank, seniority,
initiative, good-looks and firmness of thigh, in order
to determine the perfect candidate... To cut a long
story short, it's me! I know, I was as surprised as you
probably are so I demanded a recount but blow me if it
didn't come up as me again. The paperwork has been
submitted and I look forward to serving the regiment in
this more demanding role.
Yours,
Beau Jolais
