My Lord Marquis,
I was shocked to hear of the shameful behaviour of your son recently. I will
not compound your distress by dwelling on the details and merely evidence my
relief that, as yet, the potential scandal has not come to public attention.
In order to ensure that it does not do so will, I am sure, demand your
complete concentration, however. This will doubtless affect your performance
as Adjutant-General at what is probably the most critical time of the year.
Consequently, I feel that it would be best for all concerned if you were to
resign this post a month early.
