Cher Baron,
indeed, indeed - the Guards' performance under fire certainly warrant another
test before the summer campaign.
Sad as I am considering the casualties especially the Royal Foot has suffered, I
nevertheless must concede that your decision to test the men was right.
A Brigade of such importance for the general strategic situation as the Guards
must be honed to perfection like the deadly tool it will prove to be.
Only then can we hope to fulfill our duties to His Majesty and France to the
best of our abilities.
My own activities during these last months were aimed at improving cooperation
between the regiments, but as yet results in this matter stay far behind my
expectations. Still, I will take up training sessions again next month, when the
men have had a chance to wash down the dust of Flandern with wine from their
home provinces.
It will remind them of what they are fighting for.
