I write hastily from the field as I direct the troops in our continuing
efforts in this siege that has proved bloody, with the enemy challenging our
mettle with sortie after sortie. Still, we endure for France and I have
high hopes that we will ultimately triumph.
I write with regard to a command position in the Second Division which I
believe is vacant due to the unfortunate death of Jacques Inzebox.
Confusing despatches imply that this post has already been filled by an
officer of whose pedigree I am unaware, but I write to you in the hope that
these reports are untrue and that my application may meet with your favour.
