Actually, I'm not sure it's fair to say that, as HSE certainly *wouldn't* have agreed to the duel with sabres, having only submitted duelling instructions for rapiers. You're probably putting words in another character's mouth here.

As someone else has made the issue of the duelling orders public, I'll disclose what's happened re my enquiries about the matter.

As mentioned in an earlier post, I haven't been able to participate fully in the game recently, and didn't really want to make a fuss over the duel, despite my frustration at the outcome. Nevertheless, since it became an issue with JdL, JBD and SdS, I wrote to Greg, who had kindly offered to let me "coast" in the game, until my RL circumstances allow me to participate more fully in the game:

>> Duel legally v. JBD (HSE's second is JdL)
>> Rapier v. Rapier
>> Surrender: at Half-Endurance
>> Accept opponent's surrender: Immediately
>> Routine: [omitted here, in case I use it again!]
>> Will decline duels if under Half-Endurance

> This is *so* different from the turn resolution:

>> Both parties wish to fight the duel illegally.
>> Duel between HSE and JBD (enemies). JBD has cause.
>> HSE is using a Sabre and is seconded by nobody.
>> JBD is using a Sabre and is seconded by SdS.
>> HSE gets an SP for fighting an illegal duel.
>>         16
>> HSE: CL-K-Surrender
>> JBD: X -S-X
>>         46
>> HSE (Sabre) loses a duel against his regimental enemy JBD (Sabre) for -2
>> SPs
>> Endurance falls from 110 to 64. Inflicts 16 damage.

Unfortunately, until now, all I have received is the following reply:

>      There is no such thing as a legal duel.  As I mentioned in a previous
> post, all duels are illegal - it's part of the game to take the chance.

I know the duel can't be re-fought, but hopefully something can be learnt from this case, as I could imagine some more experienced Banana players, who have invested so much more in their characters than I presently have with HSE, wouldn't be too pleased if they found themselves in similar circumstances.

Peter

P.S. At the risk of sounding defensive, I'm definitely *not* coasting because any personal disgruntlement at the way this duel has been handled, and I'm grateful to Greg for giving me the opportunity to "coast". Several of you may have noticed I'm now also "coasting" in another EG game, and have (reluctantly) decided it's wisest to withdraw from another couple of games (including one where my character had reached the giddy heights of SL12 !!!). I hope to back in Banana within a few weeks/months, by which time I hope HSE will have learnt how to duel with a sabre :-) !
