Lt. Colonel du Bois
I am completely at a loss as to why yourself and those other gentlemen
mentioned were not admitted to the Stag Party at the Fleur. I gave strict
orders that all gentlemen, no matter what their station, were to be admitted
but that the proceedings could be expected to be too raucous for feminine
sensibilities. I fail to see how you could take my hypothisis that perhaps
the female companions of those gentlemen mentioned were not admitted and the
gentlemen in question far too noble to leave their ladyloves on the doorstep
to be in any way insulting. Do you really think, Sirrah, that I would go out
of my way to insult my own brother in law and former commanding officer?
The only other explanation for entry being refused to those in question is
that the staff of the Fleur either did not consider them to be gentlemen or
considered them to be in possession of feminine sensibilities. A
preposterous presumption in most cases, though it appears that in yours they
may have had a point.
Your supposition that members of the King's Muksteers (sic) may have been
barred from the proceedings is equally preposterous. Both your commanding
officer and Major de Cieux seemed to enjoy the party immensely.
If you attempted to attend the party alone and were yet denied entry by the
staff of the Fleur I suggest that you take the matter up with the management
of that establishment. Should you persist in laying the blame at my door I
should be happy to discuss the matter with you further at a time and place
of your choosing.
