OOC: Dear fellow mwmbers of Banana En Garde.
I returned late last night from 3 wonderful weeks in Austria, Germany on the Rhine, The Netherlands and Belgium. Two days ago I walked the lovely town of Brugge in the Spanish Netherlands and marvelled at the well preserved old building and canals. I had a most friendly and sympathetic reception fom all that I met. I am very pleased that I did not let the events of Sept. 11 delay or cancel my tour. I did observe the following

Mobility of mounted troops might be limited at times in the terrain of the Spanish Netherlands. It occurred that treating wagons with oakum and pitch might allow them to float for short periods, somewhat akin to a ferry or modern landing craft. Alternatively, short barges might be adaptable with removable wheels to utilize in crossing streams, canals, and even poled over swampy areas. These measures might be the 17th Century equivalent of blitzkrieg, allowing great mobility and the opportunity to cutoff enemy units.
