>From Lt.Col Marin Moreau to M. le Duc de Mylcandonai, salutations,

Beleaguered with an irksome lawsuit as I know you to be, you may well
believe I hesitate to write now. But I am convinced that further
inaction on my part will only play into the hands of the enemies of
France and of our beloved monarch, who even now are clamouring for war
at our very borders. In deference to the many demands on your time, I
shall express myself in plain fashion, sans the extempores that protocol
might dictate in more bucolic moments.

In addition to, and I am sure by no means in competition with, your
appointment as Minister of State, the King in his inestimable wisdom has
dubbed you Marshal of France. With a long summer of battle looming it
is in this latter (though to a military man such as myself scarcely
lesser) role that I feel I may be of assistance to you as an aide.

A weight of onerous administration and tiresome executive process will
thereby be lifted from your shoulders, creating a mood of effortless
elan that will doubtless percolate throughout all the armies of France,
down to the lowliest sapper. Our enemies will crumble like soft
cheeses. Perhaps the extra freedom you then find as Field Marshal would
translate to further time for contemplation of the many demands you face
as Minister of State - only a short stretch, then, to say my appointment
would thereby benefit the entire nation!

My most recent work as the 2nd Division Adjutant under Duc Robert de
l'Aubergine bears most closely on the current application, but I have a
distinguished military career stretching back many years.

In closing may I express my solicitude at the necessity of your having
been embroiled in the current political scandal, which I am sure will
soon melt away in the face of the true threat to France.

in service to France,

Marin Moreau
