Dear Brigadier General le Chevalier du Bois,
I write in response to your request for applications for the position of aide to your esteemed self. I am newly arrived in Paris from Bordeaux, where my father is a well-known wine merchant. (I enclose a letter of introduction from my father and case of an excellent 1659, which I hope that you will find to your standards.)
This month past, I was accepted to the ranks of the Royal Marines as a Subaltern. I can think of no position that would better allow me to serve the interests of la France et le Roi than as your aide. I believe you will find my papers in order and my military skills and training sufficient to the task.
