As you've already realized, pinax needs to be customized before it can really used, and there aren't enough readymade customization hooks (like django has). So you need to make changes in Pinax code. This is a nightmare as far as upgrades is concerned - Pinax is a great project to get best practices for how to set up your project. By all means, study the pinax code and copy-paste from there into your project - Incorporate individual apps from Pinax into your project.
