2011-08-09 09:28:22+0000 <blanchard1> if you're lazy like me when it comes to
reading zynga IPO filing (S-1) but are still curious about zynga's cost&revenue
structure =>

2011-08-09 09:39:34+0000 <arbrandes> mornin, blanchard1, what's up? :)
2011-08-09 09:40:39+0000 <blanchard1> not much, having coffe, reading
http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1439404/000119312511180285/ds1.htm,
thinking that i should probably get back to work rather than procrastinating on
that kind of stuff :p
2011-08-09 09:41:15+0000 <blanchard1> and you ?
2011-08-09 09:41:56+0000 <blanchard1> (though this document has relevant
figures regarding the market we're addressing...)
2011-08-09 09:42:07+0000 <arbrandes> hahahaha, you procrastinate reading SEC
filings? When I grow up I want to be like you. ;)
2011-08-09 09:42:15+0000 <blanchard1> hahaha
2011-08-09 09:42:28+0000 <blanchard1> procrastination can take very strange
forms sometimes :p
2011-08-09 10:00:39+0000 <antoviaque> bunch of crazies : )
2011-08-09 10:00:44+0000 <antoviaque> hi arbrandes :)
2011-08-09 10:01:04+0000 <antoviaque> tartarugafeliz: yep, for the website I've
sent an email to cssmenow this morning, to get an update
2011-08-09 10:05:39+0000 <arbrandes> hey antoviaque :)

2011-08-09 10:15:51+0000 <tartarugafeliz> and the presentation is here:

2011-08-09 10:18:48+0000 <blanchard1> wouhouuuuuuuuuuuuu :)
2011-08-09 10:19:06+0000 <blanchard1> tartarugafeliz: cooooooool
2011-08-09 10:20:41+0000 <antoviaque> tartarugafeliz: really cool :D
2011-08-09 10:20:49+0000 <tartarugafeliz> :)
2011-08-09 10:21:28+0000 <antoviaque> Aside from the funding, I can definitely
see how this would help to gather some players for a beta test as soon as we
have a rough version of the board interface
2011-08-09 10:21:56+0000 <blanchard1> absolutely
2011-08-09 10:22:47+0000 <antoviaque> btw my only comment about the video is
that "better than your friends?" is not at the right place, it should be right
before the invitation box
2011-08-09 10:23:04+0000 <antoviaque> but amazing job, congratz :D
2011-08-09 10:25:44+0000 <arbrandes> Beautiful trailer, tartarugafeliz! Very
exciting :)
2011-08-09 10:25:53+0000 <tartarugafeliz> hahahhaha
2011-08-09 10:26:02+0000 <tartarugafeliz> cool that everyone likes :)
2011-08-09 11:04:11+0000 dachary (dachary) is now online
2011-08-09 11:21:26+0000 dachary (dachary) is now online
2011-08-09 11:26:40+0000 mtyaka (mtyaka) is now online
2011-08-09 11:37:23+0000 <blanchard1> marketing question for who is inspired :
what is the relevant market for CS (in order to define the competition). Online
board games ? Or online card games ? Or more generically social multi-player
games that appeal to friends&families to play together ?
2011-08-09 11:38:04+0000 <blanchard1> and what criteria of differenciation
should we use within this market (that's my second question, i keep it for
after :))
2011-08-09 11:38:12+0000 <arbrandes> I'm inclined to answer generically social
games.
2011-08-09 11:38:31+0000 <antoviaque> blanchard1: are you talking funding-wise
or communication to the public?
2011-08-09 11:38:34+0000 <arbrandes> But this is just a hunch.
2011-08-09 11:38:54+0000 <blanchard1> antoviaque: what would be the difference ?
2011-08-09 11:39:13+0000 <antoviaque> funding => social is good (buzzword and
large market)
2011-08-09 11:39:43+0000 <antoviaque> public => probably online card game is
more descriptive, and more likely to meet the right audience
2011-08-09 11:39:43+0000 <blanchard1> arbrandes: thanks. You mean that any
generic social games would create a choice for the player on when to spend his
time (between his game and ours) ?
2011-08-09 11:40:21+0000 <blanchard1> yep antoviaque agreed on that
2011-08-09 11:40:40+0000 <blanchard1> bbl arbrandes going to grab something for
lunch :)
2011-08-09 11:40:55+0000 <arbrandes> blanchard1, exactly. The mindset is the
same, I think
2011-08-09 11:56:42+0000 <blanchard1> back
2011-08-09 11:56:50+0000 <blanchard1> (quick lunch :))
2011-08-09 11:58:51+0000 <blanchard1> interesting arbrandes. So ok for me, if
we assume that the market is the overall social gaming, then the next questions
is how to position CS in this *big* market. I'm looking at relevant dimensions
that would represent the perception of players.
2011-08-09 11:58:59+0000 <blanchard1> I could think of :
2011-08-09 11:59:40+0000 <blanchard1> new casual public vs traditional hardcore
audience (more and more addressed by social games, though not by us)
2011-08-09 12:00:15+0000 <arbrandes> CS is completely casual, yes
2011-08-09 12:00:18+0000 <blanchard1> solo playing vs multi player (actually we
could differentiate asynchronous multi from real time)
2011-08-09 12:00:44+0000 <blanchard1> skinnerbox gameplay vs more qualitative
gameplay (like using imagination)
2011-08-09 12:01:15+0000 <arbrandes> multi player, definitely, not sure on
asynchronous vs realtime: a lot of CS is geared towared realtime, but it can
still be played asynchronously.
2011-08-09 12:01:23+0000 <blanchard1> true
2011-08-09 12:01:40+0000 <arbrandes> "skinnerbox"?
2011-08-09 12:01:40+0000 <blanchard1> what other dimensions do we have ?
(thinking)
2011-08-09 12:01:49+0000 <antoviaque> sorry to interrupt the discussion - but
it's time for the meeting : )
2011-08-09 12:01:54+0000 <arbrandes> ahh, yes

2011-08-09 12:11:06+0000 <antoviaque> dachary: we have a 121 at 5pm - I hope to

2011-08-09 12:11:50+0000 <arbrandes> tartarugafeliz, yes, I'm already adjusting
that; I would've had to anyway, because the joined player slot underneath the
"invite a friend" a few pixels smaller.
2011-08-09 12:12:25+0000 <tartarugafeliz> can I help with that?
2011-08-09 12:12:41+0000 <arbrandes> tartarugafeliz, I'm also fixing the size
of the invite a friend button, because I made it a bit small last time around.
In a little while I'll post the new results and show you. :)

2011-08-09 12:18:27+0000 <blanchard1> (01:58:52 PM) blanchard1: interesting
arbrandes. So ok for me, if we assume that the market is the overall social
gaming, then the next questions is how to position CS in this *big* market. I'm
looking at relevant dimensions that would represent the perception of players.
2011-08-09 12:18:28+0000 <blanchard1> (01:59:00 PM) blanchard1: I could think
of :
2011-08-09 12:18:28+0000 <blanchard1> (01:59:41 PM) blanchard1: new casual
public vs traditional hardcore audience (more and more addressed by social
games, though not by us)
2011-08-09 12:18:28+0000 <blanchard1> (02:00:16 PM) arbrandes: CS is completely
casual, yes
2011-08-09 12:18:28+0000 <blanchard1> (02:00:19 PM) blanchard1: solo playing vs
multi player (actually we could differentiate asynchronous multi from real time)
2011-08-09 12:18:28+0000 <blanchard1> (02:00:45 PM) blanchard1: skinnerbox
gameplay vs more qualitative gameplay (like using imagination)
2011-08-09 12:20:43+0000 <antoviaque> skinnerbox vs qualitative is interesting,
if it provides interesting references (aka successful ones from an investor POV)
2011-08-09 12:21:00+0000 <blanchard1> yes i think so too
2011-08-09 12:21:29+0000 <blanchard1> and i guess that we might be able to
differentiate from others in this field regarding production values
2011-08-09 12:21:29+0000 <antoviaque> casual vs traditional is interesting too,
since it could show that we are in a blank spot
2011-08-09 12:21:41+0000 <blanchard1> but it's just a feeling i would need to
enquire
2011-08-09 12:21:47+0000 <antoviaque> but they are the same
2011-08-09 12:21:54+0000 <antoviaque> maybe I would use niche vs mass market
2011-08-09 12:22:20+0000 <antoviaque> It really depends on the examples you can
find
2011-08-09 12:22:35+0000 <antoviaque> they need to: produce a lot of money &
show a trend
2011-08-09 12:22:53+0000 <blanchard1> we need to position ourselves in a spot
that has potential and not too many people :)
2011-08-09 12:22:56+0000 <blanchard1> yes
2011-08-09 12:23:38+0000 <antoviaque> the way I would do it: I would look for
references for each of those axis, I think it will tell you very naturally
which ones are best
2011-08-09 12:23:38+0000 <blanchard1> like recent successes for instance, and
enough to show a trend
2011-08-09 12:24:07+0000 <blanchard1> yes good idea
2011-08-09 12:33:51+0000 <blanchard1> bbl
2011-08-09 12:34:03+0000 blanchard1 (blanchard1) is now offline
2011-08-09 12:34:15+0000 <antoviaque> ok, off to the meeting - bbl
2011-08-09 12:34:27+0000 <arbrandes> later dudes
2011-08-09 12:34:28+0000 <arbrandes> good luck!

2011-08-09 16:49:37+0000 <antoviaque> re
2011-08-09 16:49:46+0000 <arbrandes> so, how was it?
2011-08-09 16:49:53+0000 <antoviaque> it went well : )
2011-08-09 16:50:26+0000 <antoviaque> it's always hard to say with those
meetings, but he seemed guenuinely interested
2011-08-09 16:50:47+0000 <antoviaque> and, the surprising part is that he liked
the free software approach
2011-08-09 16:51:20+0000 <arbrandes> A success, it seems. Congrats! :)
2011-08-09 16:51:33+0000 <antoviaque> basicaly the place we went to today is an
association that provides founder loans (they have a business angel arm, but
that's for a later stage)
2011-08-09 16:52:10+0000 <arbrandes> Ah, so with them at first it would be a
simple loan.
2011-08-09 16:52:13+0000 <antoviaque> they are also connected to other
associations that provide funding, so it's useful to have a feet in the door
there
2011-08-09 16:52:17+0000 <antoviaque> yep
2011-08-09 16:52:37+0000 <antoviaque> but that' also a kind of label - when you
have them on board, it makes things easier with others
2011-08-09 16:53:12+0000 <arbrandes> I understand, it's all about getting the
first on board. :)
2011-08-09 16:53:42+0000 <antoviaque> yep : )
2011-08-09 16:54:27+0000 <antoviaque> and those loans are very advantageous
actually - it's not the same thing as when you get one to buy a house, they
don't ask for guarantees, etc.
2011-08-09 16:55:37+0000 <antoviaque> but we'll need to reach the beta stage
before we can apply actually - we discussed meeting again early september
2011-08-09 16:56:39+0000 <arbrandes> Even better, then... Loans are always a
kind of double-edged sword.
2011-08-09 16:56:43+0000 <arbrandes> roger that on the beta :)
2011-08-09 16:57:34+0000 <antoviaque> yep : )

2011-08-09 19:37:38+0000 <arbrandes> Lesson Number 189: No amount of work will
ever fix a unit test *if the code being tested is wrong*.
2011-08-09 19:37:50+0000 <arbrandes> lol
2011-08-09 20:17:32+0000 <blanchard> arbrandes: hahaha :) I wonder, out of the
188 previous lessons, how many are about unit tests :p
2011-08-09 20:19:01+0000 <blanchard> impressive number of tickets notification
from Adolfo since last time i checked my mail by the way
2011-08-09 20:19:24+0000 * blanchard reading
2011-08-09 20:19:25+0000 <arbrandes> blanchard, about 186. The other 2 are
about the (in)famous deferred, which I have many more lessons to cover, hahahah
2011-08-09 20:19:43+0000 <blanchard> :)
2011-08-09 20:21:02+0000 <arbrandes> blanchard, if you want to see the latest
commited work in action, you can always check here, too:

2011-08-09 20:21:33+0000 <blanchard> yeah thanks ! That's exactly what reading
the tickets made me want to ask
2011-08-09 20:21:59+0000 <arbrandes> hehehe, yeah, reading tickets is sort of
"dry", seeing stuff work is usually more satisfying
2011-08-09 20:22:29+0000 <blanchard> arbrandes: looks awesome
2011-08-09 20:23:41+0000 <arbrandes> mostly thanks to tartarugafeliz, yup, it's
looking awesome. :) Getting the animations right was a bit tough, but will be
easier from now on. We were roughly witin the banana estimate, so no time was
wasted.
2011-08-09 20:23:51+0000 <arbrandes> *within
2011-08-09 20:25:04+0000 <blanchard> yeah but the fact that it looks as good as
Deb's animation *is* awesome :) It's often not like that in games...
2011-08-09 20:25:51+0000 <blanchard> the fake game footage looks great and then
the real one is crappy because of unforeseen tech issues. So it's really cool
to see that :)
2011-08-09 20:26:58+0000 <blanchard> and btw good news regarding bananas
arbrandes !
2011-08-09 20:27:38+0000 <arbrandes> Hehehe, yeah, the translation from design
to production sometimes suffers. Gladly we (with invaluable help from
antoviaque, in this case) were able to keep the animations looking relatively
good, and still not weigh a ton. In any case, thanks for the compliment. :)
2011-08-09 20:28:40+0000 <blanchard> you welcome :) i'm impressed indeed
